The Appy TV box is fairly easy to setup and use, with some thought being put into the layout. The Appy TV box is not the highest specification TV box available but is more than capable of delivering what it says on the tin. A big plus over most of its rivals is the built-in Free to Air digital TV tuner. It’s safe to say that there is something for everybody with the range of content available through the Appy TV box. The smart Airmouse makes navigating the Appy TV box a doodle. Whilst the Appy TV box may take a bit of getting use to for traditional TV users, it certainly represents the growing popularity and future of streaming TV.
Hardware: The Appy TV box is small compact design (approximately 12cm x 10cm), its comes with Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS. At its heart is a high performance Amlogic S805 Quad Core Cortex 1.5GHz CPU paired with the Mali450 Quad Core 3D GPU which supports full 1080p HD. The Appy TV box has built-in digital tuner, 4 USB ports, a HDMI port, an Ethernet port, built in Wifi and a TF card slot.
Setup: The Appy TV box comes with everything needed to get up and running including a HDMI cable and a full set of batteries. Setup is easy with the user having to choose language, display size and their internet connection. The main Appy TV screen is weel laid out and content is easy to locate. The Digital TV has to be tuned and although not the nicest interface it is fairly intuitive.
Airmouse: The Appy TV box comes with great Air mouse which makes navigating the Appy TV screen extremely easy. The Air mouse feels good in the hand. It has a gyro, a qwerty keyboard and Android gamepad buttons. Simply point and click around the apps and functions.
Interface: As mentioned previously, the Appy TV interface is well laid out. The main screen has four large buttons for BBC Iplayer, Live TV, Netflix and TVoid a third party app store. There is a host of other apps under the smaller buttons including Browser, Email, Youtube and preloaded entertainment apps. The interface is simple and intuitive, with most content a couple of clicks away.
Software and apps: The Appy TV box runs on Android 4.4 and has the Kodi media centre preload. Unlike other devices such as the Amazon FireTV, the Appy TV box is completely open and does not have to be eoejail-brokene to install Kodi content and addons. The Live TV app for the digital TV has a full electronic program guide allowing scheduled recording of your favorite TV. It also allows great features such as pause and rewind of live TV. The media player app allows the user to plug in any USB storage device with their own media files and watch them on the big screen.
Performance: Like all streaming media TV boxes, you need a good internet connection. The Appy TV box allows the user to connect using an Ethernet cable or Wifi. The Amlogic CPU and GPU do a decent job of delivering a smooth viewing experience even at full 1080p HD. The Appy TV box is responsive and copes well with seek and rewind requests during streams. For the specification offered by the Appy TV box it is more than an adequate performer.
