The box was easy to setup and it has a well laid out interface. The Air mouse makes navigating a doodle. Generally Impressed with the box and the quality of the steaming. So far no complaints :-)

The Appy TV box is one of the latest generations of streaming media players. The Appy TV box gives you access to 1000’s of streams of the latest films, TV shows, sports and catch-up TV in full HD. The Appy TV box delivers a world of entertainment using the latest apps and Kodi media centre. The Appy TV box also comes with peace of mind as it is constantly checked and updated via the Appy TV update service, this means your software and apps are always up to date and functional.

And if that’s not enough, the Appy TV Box come with ether a built in Digital Freeview or FreeSat tuner giving you access to 100’s of digital TV and Radio channels. .With the great Appy TV interface and state of the art Airmouse, it easy to find what you’re looking for and you even browse the web with the built in Chrome browser on your HDTV, or play videos from an attached hard drive or network drive.

Ok, let’s see if the Appy TV box delivers....

Verdict

The Appy TV box is fairly easy to setup and use, with some thought being put into the layout. The Appy TV box is not the highest specification TV box available but is more than capable of delivering what it says on the tin. A big plus over most of its rivals is the built-in Free to Air digital TV tuner. It’s safe to say that there is something for everybody with the range of content available through the Appy TV box. The smart Airmouse makes navigating the Appy TV box a doodle. Whilst the Appy TV box may take a bit of getting use to for traditional TV users, it certainly represents the growing popularity and future of streaming TV.

Review

Hardware: The Appy TV box is small compact design (approximately 12cm x 10cm), its comes with Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS. At its heart is a high performance Amlogic S805 Quad Core Cortex 1.5GHz CPU paired with the Mali450 Quad Core 3D GPU which supports full 1080p HD. The Appy TV box has built-in digital tuner, 4 USB ports, a HDMI port, an Ethernet port, built in Wifi and a TF card slot.

Setup: The Appy TV box comes with everything needed to get up and running including a HDMI cable and a full set of batteries. Setup is easy with the user having to choose language, display size and their internet connection. The main Appy TV screen is weel laid out and content is easy to locate. The Digital TV has to be tuned and although not the nicest interface it is fairly intuitive.

Airmouse: The Appy TV box comes with great Air mouse which makes navigating the Appy TV screen extremely easy. The Air mouse feels good in the hand. It has a gyro, a qwerty keyboard and Android gamepad buttons. Simply point and click around the apps and functions.

Interface: As mentioned previously, the Appy TV interface is well laid out. The main screen has four large buttons for BBC Iplayer, Live TV, Netflix and TVoid a third party app store. There is a host of other apps under the smaller buttons including Browser, Email, Youtube and preloaded entertainment apps. The interface is simple and intuitive, with most content a couple of clicks away.

Software and apps: The Appy TV box runs on Android 4.4 and has the Kodi media centre preload. Unlike other devices such as the Amazon FireTV, the Appy TV box is completely open and does not have to be eoejail-brokene to install Kodi content and addons. The Live TV app for the digital TV has a full electronic program guide allowing scheduled recording of your favorite TV. It also allows great features such as pause and rewind of live TV. The media player app allows the user to plug in any USB storage device with their own media files and watch them on the big screen.

Performance: Like all streaming media TV boxes, you need a good internet connection. The Appy TV box allows the user to connect using an Ethernet cable or Wifi. The Amlogic CPU and GPU do a decent job of delivering a smooth viewing experience even at full 1080p HD. The Appy TV box is responsive and copes well with seek and rewind requests during streams. For the specification offered by the Appy TV box it is more than an adequate performer.

There's an absolutely incredible amount of content that Appy TV delivers to your TV, and it has all of the popular services! What's even more incredible is how affordable the box is.

Great product. Did have to get a friend to fully load it for me. Can now watch anything, movies sports etc. So much so that have cancelled my sky subscription as was getting ridiculously expensive. The better the Internet service you have the better the streaming. Would recommend to buy this product

Previously I had been using my LG smart TV and an Apple TV box. I thought I was happy with my ‘smart TV' gadgetry, but this has just blown the other two out of the water, and then some! It also does this at a tiny fraction of the cost of the other two!

For a Prime subscriber on the fence about a £89 Fire TV, the Appy TV box is a no-brainer. The ease and convenience of getting a growing catalog of free content on your TV is certainly worth the price.

The Appy TV box is simply the most powerful and entertaining streaming HDMI device on the market, and a hell of a deal to boot.

I love this. We recently cancelled Sky and replaced it with this. I actually bought 2 for the price of 1 months Sky subscription. There is loads of choice of programmes. I now wonder why we carried on with Sky for so long when this costs a fraction of the price

I love this product! I previously had the NOWTV box so I wanted to try the appy tv box. I do not regret that purchase! Its a great little item that lets you do a wide range of things such as watch films, listen to music, catch up TV, play games and so much more.

For the price, it's a perfectly viable streaming-media option, and the best one if you've already bought have a netflix subscription and know how to use Kodi.

To give this review some context, I'm now in my 11th month of being an Appy TV user and I still use it on a daily basis. Mine came with the standard remote, but I later upgraded to the keyboard remote.

You can load pretty much anything on this with a little confidence - I've been able to load Google Chrome, Firefox, Kodi and much more onto the box in minutes and all work perfectly. You can even load Facebook, Snapchat, Whatsapp and much more on it!

Excellent does what it says as advertised. Although, I found the range of the Appy TV Box limited when I plugged it into the TV up stairs which resulted in glitches in the signal, but worked fine with the TV down the stairs when placed close to the modem.

Incredibly easy to use and flexible, with options for more technically minded. My dad, a complete technophobe managed to set it up in minutes whilst I have enabled kodi to stream to it from any smart device in the house.

A lot of people will be looking at the Appy TV Box comparing it to devices like the Chromecast and may be swayed towards the Chromecast because it is marginally cheaper. I have both however and there are clear advantages to the Appy TV Box.

With our Sky TV subscription renewal coming up in August 2016 we decided we have paid far too much in subscriptions to Sky over a 25 year + period without any acknowledgement of loyalty or anything and if you complaint to Sky all you get is " Do you want me to put you through to cancellations ?" Now we are able to set up the Appy TV Box and use our TV as we want to use it without the nearly £100 per month bill. This is important to us as I am now retired and my partner is considering retirement at present.

Works out of the box in a couple of minutes. This was a relief since I had already tried to get the catch up tv channels on my new freesat box...only bbc iplayer available...ok so I've just bought a new smart tv, surely the channels are available on that...no they are not. So it was with great relief that I plugged in the appy tv and it actually worked. no messing about just plug in and go and getting all the channels I want for catch up.

It works smoothly and generally well, though I have had to resort to disconnecting it from the power supply a couple of times when it froze and caused the TV to lock up.
  • BabyBanana
    13-Jul-2015
It does not work properly. It consistently stops working and freezes so you have to spend hours pressing and holding down buttons to get to the screen you want. Also it is very slow and usually there is a 1980's style lag between the pressing and the action. It can drive you insane if you want to flick through quickly because you are always one step ahead of your self

We have unlimited broadband and wireless coverage near the TV is good, but still surprised how seamless the streaming is. In fact the HD quality is far better than Sky. We subscribe to Sky HD+ and pay over £50 a month, but we're seriously considering cancelling the sky subscription and using the sky box for freeview.

Bought this primarily for a spare TV in a box room as there is no TV point..but soon plugged it into my main television as a alternative to the satellite..the picture quality on series like Klondike, Hell on Wheels is really first class..in my view better than Sky HD..Do not have super fast broadband just standard BT..no issues with buffering etc..remote I find a tad fiddly but it's a clever piece of kit all round.

A great piece of kit I personally feel this is much better than the chromecast which I also have. I got the chromecast so I could cast/mirror what's on my iPad and iPhone but that's all it did And it didn't come with all the demand/catch up channels unlike the appy tv out the box you can have all four catch up apps plus a choice of loads of apps and games

I bought the appy tv box on pre-order offer to replace my Apple TV, mainly due to the fact that the Kodi media centre (formerly XBMC) is installed on the appy box.

So Sorry. I had to send mine back after many tech issues. The main one being that when I switched the device on in the lounge something went down the house network of HDMI cables and this turned TV's on in other rooms. I then had to go round turning these off. On a brighter side the technical support lady that helped me try and sort this out on a number of occasions was fantastic and understanding.

Very good and excellent value. Especially we liked the lack of wires and was very simple to install. We were dreading its arrival and finding we would have to call in our son in law to do for us but No two 70 year olds managed it for ourselves????

Constantly drops Wi-Fi connection and then tells me to check router. Says 'home' is not available and needs to be turned on and off to get away from that menu. Can't watch for more than 30 minutes without connection dropping.Waste of money

Awesome little piece of kit. Means I don't have to watch episode after episode of Paw Patrol and peppa pig while at home, I can plug this in to the little babes TV in his room, load up Netflix and he's away. Then I can hide in the lounge at catch up on the soaps! Win win!

After reading the reviews for this item, I found that it does make a tv with HMDI port an actual smart tv! I hadn't known about this before. Just plugged it in the back of my set and to the wall socket, and it worked! The only thing I didn't know was that I can't use my other remotes to control it, like my tv remote and my sky+ remote so now I have 3 remotes I have to use for tv watching, which is annoying, but tolerable. A remote is included and it's simple to use. I would recommend this item, it means you don't have to spend hundreds of £ buying a new TV. For that reason alone, I Love it!

Rubbish! Although we have BT Infinity and have no problem with Wi-Fi with any other devices the Appy TV keeps losing signal almost all the time. Have tried it on the downstairs TV and on the upstairs TV, same result - lost signal.

I panicked that I would not be able to set the appy tv box up by myself. It was surprisingly easy and I did it in less than 15 minutes. Getting to know how it works has also been very easy. I am not young and not very technologically minded. It's great and easy peasy.

Just set up my appy tv - was a bit worried after reading some of the negative reviews- no need. My fairly old Sony TV appears to have no problems. The device was easy to install and my sometimes not all that quick internet connection works fine. Can't wait to watch my first movie tonight

Connected fine to my router and home network but refused to play any Audio on my TV, spoke to Appy's tech team who were unable to help. After some research on the Web I've found this is a common problem for older HDMI TV's. So if your thinking of purchasing this product and your HDMI TV is over 5yrs old beaware you may not be able to receive any audio.

Seems ok, but after around a month I still haven't used it to watch anything. At first glance the layout of the content including what's free and what's not seems a bit complex and slow, and after trying to navigate through loads of (for me) irrelevant content I lost interest.

Brilliant little device. The USB fits into the back of my TV and allows instant access to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Curzon etc (with a subscription) so I've managed to cancel my ridiculously expensive Virgin TV contract and just use this along with freeview saving a fortune. Easy to set up and I'm able to move it between 2 different TVs without having to set it up or sign in again. Great value - highly recommended!

is a great product - technically better than Google's current Chromecast, and the wireless range is better than other wireless devices we have at home, but there are some unfortunate drawbacks that stop me giving it 5 stars.

Amazing little gadget, can be plugged into any HDMI port, I have had this for about 4 hours now and I have downloaded Netflix and YouTube. I would recommend getting the gaming remote!!!! As it is quite hard to navigate with the remote and the app. I LOVE THIS!! it can turn any TV into a smart TV instantly

I got this on offer so have kept it. I feel this is in it's infancy & the next generations will be better (I hope) and this is sort of the start to see what works etc. It does have some good choice with a netflix membership BUT not enough for my liking is free. I refuse to pay for TV & films when I have Sky TV (I won't get started on my hate for paying Sky!!)

I ordered the appy tv reluctantly as I was unsure as to how well it would work and was concerned that the set up might not be straightforward......I was wrong! The set up process was so simple with no issues whatsoever. I have actually just ordered another appy tv for a spare TV that does not have an aerial at present as I tried the appy tv with this and it worked great!
